President Tom Shaw and General Manager Mark Curtis of Gorham Sand & Gravel, Inc. accepted the Maine Employer’s Mutual Insurance Company 2010 Safety Management Award at the recent Annual Meeting of the Policyholders. The award recipient is chosen from the more than 20,000 policyholders.

The award is for achievement by both employees and management to create a safe and caring place of work. MEMIC President and CEO John Leonard noted, “…a mark of a successful business is a successful worker’s compensation program.”

Mark Curtis said, “You run a successful safety program by involving everyone from the newest employee to ownership and everyone in between. Our formula is to make safety the responsibility of not only the foreman but the whole crew”. Gorham Sand & Gravel won the award because of a combination of efforts that include a new hire orientation program with pre-employment physicals, drug testing, a return to work program, annual OSHA 10-hour training, safety inspections and employee safety bonus program.

“We’re very proud of our employees and the value our owners have placed on the effort to improve workplace safety and claims management.
