MEMIC Award presentation
President Tom Shaw and General Manager Mark Curtis of Gorham Sand & Gravel, Inc. accepted the Maine Employer’s Mutual Insurance Company 2010 Safety Management Award at the recent Annual Meeting of the Policyholders. The award recipient is chosen from the more than 20,000 policyholders.
The award is for achievement by both employees and management to create a safe and caring place of work. MEMIC President and CEO John Leonard noted, “…a mark of a successful business is a successful worker’s compensation program.”

How to Fix a Muddy Driveway
It seems like a seasonal right of passage, Mud Season! I am often asked “why can’t I just add some new dry gravel to my driveway, won’t that solve my problem?” The answer is maybe, if at all, for a very short period.
Imagine making pancakes for the kids on Sunday morning. The pancake batter represents the mud and the dry pancake mix represents the new gravel. Add more pancake mix to the batter it will harden up enough to support the spoon, but add a little more water and you are back to batter or mud in your driveway.

Skvorak Dental, Westbrook
Serendipity can be a good thing. When the Maine DOT paved Route 302 in Westbrook a few years ago, the previous owner of the property had the foresight to hire Gorham Sand & Gravel to stub out the water & sewer lines at Route 302. This was done because the DOT has a five-year moratorium on digging a recently paved roadway. We have now returned to the site and are completing the entire Medical office complex for general contractor Great Falls Construction and project owner Skvorak Dental. Something we can all smile about.

During tough economic times the value of hard work and attention to detail often make the biggest difference in the success or failure of a project. This project became a reality in part, because of the value our engineering recommedations offered. By modifying the site projection elevation, we reduced the amount of fill required, which in turn reduced the overall cost of the project.

Start Right. End Right. This project is an example of how we gained the general contractor, Ledgewood Construction multiples of time. We take pride in getting our part of the project done on, or before the schedule.
We demolished the old school and recycled the steel and old concrete back at our facility in Buxton. This site offered many complexities that were apparent from day one, from the existing marginal soil conditions to the unanticipated asbestos in the walls of the existing school that were found during the demolition. To be sure not to put the project behind schedule we completed some work out of sequence while the abatement contractor worked. This allowed the entire job to stay on schedule even though the meticulous task of abatement was added after we started and the schedule was “in stone”.

Gorham Sand & Gravel has lots of experience with Combined Sewer Overflow projects. Cumberland County communities want to keep Casco Bay clean by separating existing sewer and stormwater mains. The Madison and Greenleaf CSO project for the City of Portland is an example of how we replaced the mains, reconstructed the street and upgraded the walks. On Schedule and On Budget.

Located on Presumpscot Street in Portland. This project consisted of reclaiming a former concrete spoil dump site by first extracting all of the concrete disposed of on the site. Crushing it with our mobile crusher to turn it into structural fill, placing and compacting the material to prepare the site for the development of the newest addition to the Moody’s Collision group. Moody's is open for business-stop by and see their latest state of the art facility.

Located on Bedford Street in Portland. This 3+ million dollar project included the green construction practices and solutions, environmental site remediation, and porous walks which allow rain to drain through them rather than increase site run-off. The finishing touches were completed in August 2009

Located just off Ocean Avenue in Portland. This nearly three million dollar project consisted of installing new sewer and drainage systems. To make way for this project, existing water and gas mains needed to be relocated. The street sidewalk and curbing were reconstructed in the process. Finish paving was completed in July 2009.

Portland Jetport Parking Garage
Located at the Portland Jetport. This project consisted of approximately demolition of an existing inadequate parking garage and the construction of a new state of the art parking facility including all the security measures required for today’s traveling public. Job completed May 2009.
